Editorial standards and corrections

How we research, source and correct what we publish, so you know what to expect from a MuchMoreMaps article.

What we publish

MuchMoreMaps is an independent site that explains how borders, cities, cultures and landscapes came to look the way they do. Every article should help you understand a place or pattern, not just list facts.

How we source

  • We prefer primary and authoritative sources: government and mapping agencies, treaties and official records, the United Nations, academic research and respected reference works.
  • Each article lists its main sources at the end so you can check them.
  • Statistics and “first”, “largest” or “only” claims are checked against reliable sources before publication, because they are the claims most often repeated wrongly.

Contested places

We use widely recognised names and say plainly when a border, status or name is disputed. We describe what each side claims rather than picking one, and we explain that our maps are not an endorsement of any claim.

Maps and images

Maps are either created by us or credited to their makers with a link to the source or license. If we adapt someone’s map, we say so. Maps are simplified for clarity and are not for navigation or legal use.

Independence

Editorial decisions are not for sale. If we ever publish sponsored content, affiliate links or advertising, we will label it clearly and keep it separate from our reporting.

Corrections

We want to know when we get something wrong. When we confirm an error, we:

  • fix it in the article as soon as we can,
  • add a note at the top of the page saying what changed and when, for anything that affects the meaning, and
  • never quietly change a fact in a way that hides the earlier mistake.

Report an error

Tell us the article, the sentence or map, what you think is wrong, and a source if you have one.
